It is 7:40 a.m., you are on a cold floor under one buzzing overhead bulb, looking at tile somebody else picked out years before you signed anything. The room is not ugly. It just does not feel like yours.
Short answer: change the floor first, the light second, and add one object you would actually photograph. Everything a renter can fix in a bathroom is soft, portable or rechargeable — the mat, the lighting, the textiles, the storage. Leave the tile alone. The tile is almost never the reason the room feels flat.
What can you actually change in a rental bathroom?
Four things, reliably: the floor, the light, the textiles, and the surfaces you set objects on. Anything screwed into a stud, wired in or bonded to grout belongs to your landlord and your deposit. The useful question is not "what am I allowed to do" but "what comes back out" — and peel-and-stick tile over old grout is the answer people argue about at the end of a tenancy.
What should you change first in a rental bathroom?
Start on the floor: the largest surface you are allowed to cover, the cheapest to change, the one that reads first in a photograph. Then fix the light, because a bathroom is a task room lit like a hallway. Then add one object with a personality.

We can put numbers on that order, because we publish bathroom scenes for a living. Between 11 July and 24 August 2026 we posted 19 bathroom scenes to our Pinterest account. Pulled on 5 September 2026, they had drawn 428,078 impressions and 4,868 saves — a 1.14% save rate. The interesting part is which ones won.

Every one of the five is a floor, a light or a colour. Not one shows new tile, and two of the ten most-saved say so in the caption — the grout stays as boring as the landlord left it. This is our own data, and it measures what people want to look at, not what they bought. But it points the same way every time.
Practically: one mat with a pattern strong enough to argue with the tile, thin enough to clear the door swing. A quick-dry striped bath mat is one worked example, at a 4 mm (0.2 in) profile on a PVC backing.

How do you make ugly rental tile look better without replacing it?
You do not fix tile you dislike — you give the eye somewhere better to go. Put a saturated pattern on the floor in front of it, then drop the light level so the tile reads as background; cold overhead light makes grout the loudest line in the room. If you must cover something, cover the smallest area that changes the most.
How do you fix bad bathroom lighting when you can't rewire?
Add a second, lower, warmer source and stop relying on the ceiling. Guidance puts a bathroom at 70–80 foot-candles, and one foot-candle is one lumen per square foot, so a 40-square-foot bathroom is being asked for roughly 2,800 to 3,200 lumens. One fitting rarely delivers that, and when it does, all of it arrives from the least flattering angle.
The renter version is battery or USB-rechargeable, on adhesive, beside the mirror or by the door rather than in the shower. Nothing in a decorative lighting range is rated for direct water, ours included, so the rule is placement.

How do you decorate a bathroom with no counter space?
Go vertical and go corner. The surfaces a rental gives you are one narrow ledge and the rim of the bath, so the fastest gain is getting the daily bottles off both. An adhesive corner shelf, a hook rail and one catchall tray empty a ledge faster than any organiser that sits on it.
An acrylic corner shower shelf states its own limits plainly: 3 mm acrylic, 90° corners only, smooth non-porous surfaces such as tile, glass or marble.
Painted or textured walls will not hold it — measure the corner before you order.
What bathroom decor actually survives the humidity?
A bathroom is the dampest room you live in, and the EPA's mould guidance is that indoor relative humidity should stay below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent — a range a hot shower blows past. Run the fan, and choose pieces that dry rather than pieces that hold water.

Skip re-grouting unless the grout is failing — hours of work on the part of the room nobody looks at, when a mat covers the same worry in ten seconds. Skip a full wall of peel-and-stick inside a shower surround; you own the removal. And skip buying five accessories at once: our best scenes are one bold thing plus restraint.
Two alternatives worth comparing honestly, neither of them us. For a mat you can machine-wash weekly, a washable-system rug such as Ruggable is worth a look — the trade-off is a thinner, flatter feel.
